3 Wing Door Drills

A 3-wing router bit, or 3-flute bit, offers a smoother finish and longer cutting life than bits with fewer wings
. It is primarily used for creating grooves, decorative edges, and raised panels in woodworking projects.
Three primary uses for 3-wing router bits:
  1. Making frame and panel doors: For cabinet making and other furniture projects, a set of 3-wing rail and stile bits is used to create the interlocking profiles for a door frame. The 3-wing raised panel bit is then used to shape the floating inner panel that fits into the frame.
  2. Cutting smooth slots and grooves: A 3-wing slot-cutting bit is ideal for quickly and cleanly cutting grooves into the edge of a workpiece. It is used to create grooves for:
    • Frame and panel doors: Cutting the groove in the door frame to hold the floating panel.
    • Picture frames: Making grooves to hold glass or backing material.
    • Joinery: Creating joinery with a perfectly sized and smooth slot.
  3. Creating decorative raised panels: Large 3-wing raised panel bits are used on a router table to shape the edges of cabinet doors and other decorative panels. The three cutters produce a very smooth profile, which often requires little to no sanding. The extra wings help achieve this superior finish, especially on large, hard-to-cut panels.
